Wales Antiques

This blog will from time to time complement my Wales Antiques Web Site and its printed companion. The guide is a developing listing of general suppliers of antiques and collectables in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Powys and beyond; it now including auctions and in the future specialist heritage related attractions. Over 23 years it has become an essential resource for anyone with an interest in buying and selling antiques and collectables in West Wales and Beyond. My Phat Yashica Mat; Mono Wedding Shots in Pembrokeshire

I mentioned in my last post the family sortie to Pembrokeshire and a wedding party; sunshine, beautiful views and gorgeous vegetarian food. Old friends and acquaintances and a chance (is it really SO wrong to do this at a wedding?) to network. Sadie Gould who works on a Guardian picture desk obviously was a clear network opportunity surely? Why some should have interpreted it as ‘flirting’ is beyond me though the fact that I’d not brought any business cards with me left my protestations muted.

Anyway it turns out that a vintage Yashica Mat Twin Lens reflex camera is not unlike a babe magnet; obviously you need a fairly powerful geek filter fitted to get the best out of it and probably while you’re doing that slap on some factor 50 duffer protection but apart from that you’re good to go. Anyway my point is that the young people seemed to go for this vintage nonsense. I’m not surprised really as the ubiquity of digital chaff must start to do something to the brain eventually; film must be starting to look somewhat unusual if not exotic.

Or possibly, like the well-brought-up children that they were, they had been tasked with taking it in turns to humour the daft old bugger. Come to think of it I did think it odd that just as I got to the interesting bit (showing them the actual inside of the camera) I’d have to start explaining it all to someone else…

And here are the pictures I salvaged from 24 exposures.
