It’s autumn for sure; two pounds of blackberries from the lane behind the house. I reckon there’s a couple more brambling Sundays this year though I’m told the Devil likes to spit on them after September 29th. I’ll take my chances; it probably only happens in England.

I like them off the briar, I like them in a crumble but best of all I like them stewed; a little sugar and then enjoyed with (say) Conti’s vanilla ice cream.

Here are some berries I enjoyed in 2007.

This is the blog of Paul Williams, Ceredigion resident since 1970. I am an English and Philosphy graduate of what was once known as St David's University College, at Lampeter. I played bass in Dyfed's first punk band, and living in Llandewi Brefi, had a grandstand view of Operation Julie. Eventually, after 2 years playing bass in Brighton's 256th punk band, I returned to Wales to deal in books and then antiques. I've trained and worked as a counsellor, I am a photographer, blog and web designer and I publish the annual Wales Antiques Guide. I am married and a father of one. Apart from my family, my interests include books, maps, Nikon, Yashica and Mamiya film cameras, British Culture 1935 - 1965, Poole pottery, Welsh textiles, and Poster art. My favourite movies include anything by Pressburger and Powell favourite music includes Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and anything form San Francisco 1965-1970. I am a late convert to 'Kraut Rock'.

damn, we breakfasted in Conti’s on the big welsh walk, but never tried the ice cream.

    • Ceredigion is blessed with another great ice cream maker; The Hive on the Quay at Aberaeron.
As well as honey ice creams they make lovely sorbets too.
But Conti’s has that home made taste and texture… mmmmm

We went to Lampeter last summer and naturally I had to have a Conti’s ice cream. After bigging it up to all and sundry I was a bit disappointed I must say.

    Don’t look back…

  3. If you get over to Aberaeron try the sorbets at the Hive…. I think I’ll have to to do something on local ice cream because I’m a big fan of Crymych’s Mary’s Farmhouse Ice creams and sorbets… This I daresay is why you are svelte I am not.

Went out blackberrying at the weekend and came back with a very thin haul… wasn’t sure if we were early or late, but the pickin’s were slim… maybe the devil has already called here..

  5. I’d guess we have an earlier crop because it’s cooler and wetter… Sloes next then?
