Stupid Crap Dull Meaningless Pictures

The questioned posed by Bob Machin (\’When did taking stupid, crap, dull, meaningless etc. pictures become seemingly the only necessary qualification for being an exhibited photographer?\’) in response to Sara Ramos\’ Invasion of Everything That Was Restrained warranted much discussion on FaceBook.

So now\’s YOUR chance; one week, one image. The image must be colour, must have 50 words minimum explaining its meaning, and have a title that compounds the crime.

Paul Williams

This is the blog of Paul Williams, Ceredigion resident since 1970. I am an English and Philosphy graduate of what was once known as St David's University College, at Lampeter. I played bass in Dyfed's first punk band, and living in Llandewi Brefi, had a grandstand view of Operation Julie. Eventually, after 2 years playing bass in Brighton's 256th punk band, I returned to Wales to deal in books and then antiques. I've trained and worked as a counsellor, I am a photographer, blog and web designer and I publish the annual Wales Antiques Guide. I am married and a father of one. Apart from my family, my interests include books, maps, Nikon, Yashica and Mamiya film cameras, British Culture 1935 - 1965, Poole pottery, Welsh textiles, and Poster art. My favourite movies include anything by Pressburger and Powell favourite music includes Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and anything form San Francisco 1965-1970. I am a late convert to 'Kraut Rock'.

Been out with my camera this morning and I have report that taking crap pictures ain’t as easy as you might imagine. I sense someone somewhere is slinging my petard over a stout branch in readiness for my submission on Thursday.

  2. You’ve seen through my evil plan…

Why must it be colour, BTW?

    • It’s always colour, usually with a fluorescent tube/street lamp cast isn’t it?

BTW ‘getting into’ Sara Lamos’ work. The problem as I see it is that it’s a photograph of a sculpture and forcing us to engage with it as photograph is sort of beside the point. Thinking about it as a sculpture; screwed up paper, yes that’s what happens to DISCARDED ideas (not neccesarily bad ones) but don’t they go in the bin? Not hanging from the fahkin’ ceiling.

Anyway, as you’ve pointed out, making bad photographs is hard work. Good luck!

Works a treat after registering. Surely no rules about what you photograph. On the courses I’ve done they were pretty sniffy about photographing other art yet I see this done all the time. Who makes these rules and if you are not after a qualification or a job why obey them. Please yourself it’ll end up in landfill anyway.

stupid, crap, dull and meaningless…I’m not so sure I can produce such an image.. 🙂
Stupid, crap, dull and meaningless description however (such as the one to go with the stupid , crap, dull and meaningless photo that Bob referenced) now that I can possible do!

  6. Bob says:

Got to rise to the challenge Laura – it ain’t as easy as it looks. Maybe you could work with ‘pretentious’ rather than crap…

  7. Bob says:

Paul can you take that picture of mine off the gallery? I thought I was posting it to my profile, not to this competition… most confusing…

  8. photographybylola says:

Actually Paul can you take mine off too??? I want something different and umm…better at being dull and crap and meaningless… :/

  9. So far we’ve 3 photos; what with one thing and another I think it’ll be useful to extend the deadline; last upload 30th November and voting until Thursday

  10. Bob says:

Personally, I’m missing the opportunity to comment on submissions. They seem to engender nothing if not debate. Is that not possible?

  11. Ian says:

Bresson would be proud of that one Bob.

  12. Bob says:

Arguably not crap enough, but I think it scores big on pretentious…
